Ask Dave your basement remodeling questions
Asked By: John K. Last Updated on: 11 November 2009
Question:
Dave,
We are about to build a new house and we have a couple of lot options, some that are for a walk-out basement and some for look-out basement. In your opinion, what are some pros and cons of walk-out basements vs look-out basements?
Thanks,
John
Dave Answers:
The only advantage I could see a lookout having over a walkout would be a little more ground around the house. This would regulate the inside temperature a bit more from the extra exposure a walkout would have.
Personally, I'd take a walkout any day over a lookout.
Further...
If you can, opt for the 9' ceiling - it'll make a HUGE difference in the openness of the space. Also, checkout my article online about bathrooms and stairs. Unless you know EXACTLY what you want to do in terms of a rough-in and are sure you won't change your mind, don't do it now as it will most likely end up wrong. As for the stairs, take note of the style of stairs your builder will be putting in and act accordingly.
Lastly, opt to have all the mechanicals situated so they are together as much as possible and not centered in the room. Pay a few more bucks for a bigger furnace that can be at one end of the house and push to the other end. You'll thank me later when you're ready to finish your basement as the open space will afford you many nice options as far as the layout is concerned.
