Ask Dave your basement remodeling questions

Question:
Dave - I am considering remodeling our basement utilizing removable wall panels with "architectural fabric." I have found some do it yourself kits that claim to be similar to the kits sold by large manufacturers such as owens corning / champion. I like the thought of being able to remove single panels vs sheet rock if there are ever any future problems with water/foundation/plumbing, etc. Can you provide your comments on the postives/negatives of these systems? My understanding is that they utilize a R12 foam insulation panel, covered with fabric that is tucked in between adjacent panels. Also, I believe the systems use metal studs with a "J" top stinger. Appreciate any thoughts.
Dave Answers:
I've seen these products at home shows and honestly I've not been impressed. I do however, see the benefit of having access to get behind the walls if there's a problem with water down the road.
My biggest issue has been two-fold. (1) The panels I've seen have always struck me as looking "cheap." I haven't seen one that I like yet. My second objection is that with the panels and a drop ceiling you'll never get away from that "basement" look - something undesireable if you want your basement to be an extension of the rest of your house.
